The general objective of PRO-METROFOOD is to bring the emerging METROFOOD-RI ESFRI project to the level of maturity required for entering in the active project list (in view of the ESFRI Roadmap 2018), strengthening the Consortium and planning the future phases.

 In order to reach this general objective, 4 specific objectives have been identified:

  • OBJ1 – design strategies on the medium and long terms
  • OBJ2 – provide the organizational framework of METROFOOD-RI
  • OBJ3 – demonstrate the capability of METROFOOD-RI to supply scientific services and prepare the chart of services
  • OBJ4 – establish plans to coherently integrate METROFOOD-RI into the European landscape, realising coordination with EU and National initiatives and positioning at a global level

Work Packages

The PRO-METROFOOD activities are organized in 8 Work Packages, each managed by a work package leader responsible for the outcome and timing of its work package.

Working PackageWP TitleWP Leader
WP1Project ManagementENEA (IT)
WP2Strategic PlanningIBA (RO)
WP3Construction Management of METROFOOD-RI INSA (PT)
WP4Technical Feasibility Study - Physical-RIUPPA (FR)
WP5Technical Feasibility Study - e-RIRIVM (NL)
WP6Integration in the EU landscape and coordination with National initiativesCIDETEC (ES)
WP7Communication, Training and DisseminationCULS (CZ)
WP8Ethics requirementENEA (IT)

With reference to the PRO-METROFOOD working packages, the ambitionsare:

  • To determine the overall governance and financial strategy with clear timeline and milestones for all the METROFOOD-RI phases (WP2, WP3);
  • To consolidate the consortium ensuring continuity during the Interim Phases (WP2, WP3);
  • To create an on-going dialogue with ministerial representatives of various Countries (EU-IMG; WP1, WP3) and with stakeholders (Stakeholder Forum; WP7)
  • To maximise the opportunities to connect METROFOOD-RI to other related research initiatives, the general metrology programmes and with the other National and European (ESFRI) research infrastructures, for obtaining an effective integration in the EU and National landscape (WP2; WP6)
  • To encourage and convince the involved Countries to attribute funding to the construction and operation of METROFOOD-RI and/or to explicitly include METROFOOD-RI in their national RI roadmaps and Smart Specialisation Strategies for the European Structural and Investment Funds (ESIF) (WP2, WP3)
  • To promote and create new opportunity of integration and interactivity both at national and European level (WP2, WP6, WP7);
  • To explore the possibility for pilot services, in terms of new reference materials for food analysis (WP4) and innovative applications based on exploitation of existing data (WP5), in order to demonstrate the actual capability of METROFOOD-RI to provide its services;
  • To provide a unique and simple transnational access to both academic research groups, as well as industrial partners, to solve all questions related to food quality issues in respect of continuous evolving European and international regulations.

PRO-METROFOOD specific objectives (OBJ) and their relations with the WPs

Components of the work plan and their inter-relations

The picture shows the structure of PRO-METROFOOD and the graphical presentation of the seven WPs (except WP8 about Ethics) and their interdependencies. WP1, comprising all the aspects of project management, is related to all the other WPs (coordination, organisation, control and verification of the project progresses). WPs focused on designing and improving METROFOOD-RI will be inter-related for many different aspects: WP2 and WP3 - taken together - will realise the “wide planning” of METROFOOD-RI and will permit to define and develop the core and supportive components and the structural determinants. WP4 and WP5, related to the technical implementation, on one hand will provide useful inputs for defining the users and access policies, as well as for establishing the needs in term of human resources, and on the other hand will permit to demonstrate the actual capability of the RI to provide its services. Thanks to WP6, supportive elements to the strategic analysis will be provided and the positioning of METROFOOD-RI will be examined and then defined. WP3 is directly linked, other than with WP2 for the strategic aspects, with WP7, being communication strategy a part of the management conceptual model. Figure shows also the main outputs, which will be obtained thanks to the WP activities (in green): the “internal” (confidential) components are grouped in the right side, while the “external” (public) ones are grouped in the left side. Relationships with European Commission, the European Inter-Ministerial Group (EU-IMG) and the Stakeholder Forum (SF) are also highlighted.
